But alas, instead we get another adapter. Force restart iPad (models with the Home button) Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. By Alison Barretta last updated 22 September 2021 Get to the root of why your Apple Pencil isn't working. The new iPad got the same face-lift that the iPad mini did last year, and the mini has second generation Apple Pencil support. I would think that switching over to the second generation Apple Pencil would be a smart move as Apple moves away from the lighting connector. However in the Bluetooth menu under 'Devices', the pencil is not showing up. Both the lighting-to-lightning adapter and USB-C-to-lighting adapter will arrive, so you can charge the pencil with whatever cable you have. When I connect it to the magnetic charging, it says 'Apple Pencil' on the top of the screen, blinking black and gray and when I click on on it nothing happens. Now, when you order a first generation Apple Pencil, two different adapters will come in the box. This allows the pencil to be connected directly to the iPad to charge it, or else you can use the lightning-to-lighting adapter that was included to charge up the pencil with the same cable that came with the iPad. For most other iPad’s limited to the first-generation Apple Pencil, an adapter is unnecessary, as the device features Apple’s own lightning connector. This $9 adapter is available for purchase on Apple’s shop it features USB-C connector on one end and a lightning connector on the other. So while you can draw to your heart’s content on your new (more expensive) entry level iPad, you’ll need an easy-to-lose adapter to charge that pencil up. But while the new iPad gained a USB-C port in place of its Lightning port, it’s only compatible with the first-generation Apple Pencil. In a series of press releases today, Apple announced the new iPad Pro, Apple TV 4K, and entry-level iPad.

Bake for about 60 minutes or until set in the center. The water will create steam in the oven and prevent the cheese cake from developing a hard crust. It has a pin (the black tab) that slides in and out to seal the pan to the base. The pan is fantastic, but took some getting used to, because it is transparent and flexible. I need to test to see if it is waterproof, but that is asking a lot of a springform pan and I would continue to wrap the bottom in foil if I used it in water. I baked this cheesecake without a water bath. That, in itself, is brilliant, but the silicone also gives insurance that the cake will not stick to the sides, so there is no holding your breath as you remove it. The base is made of ceramic, so it is lovely enough to serve on, which eliminates the need to remove the cake from the base. It is made by Lekue and uses the same technology as the beloved silicone mats. This Lekue 9-Inch Springform Pan may be the coolest new toy in my kitchen. It was a eureka moment, since both saved time, money and provided results like nothing I’d used. I felt this way about the Silpat and the Microplane Grater when they first hit the restaurant kitchen scene. Once in a while I find a new product that changes the way I cook and bake. Here’s a peanut butter and jelly cheesecake that has all the fond memories of those childhood sandwiches, but it’s way more decadent and sophisticated. The truth is that I love it too almost everyone does, if we’re honest. In my head I wanted them to eat bento boxes, with carved vegetables and seaweed salad, but, it was their lunch, their choice and they loved PB&J. I mostly dreaded other parents finding out that my kids ate the same thing over and over. They’re certainly easy to make, which saved me lots of time in the mornings before school, but I felt a little guilty packing it for them EVERY day. I’ve gone through what must be 100s of pounds of peanut butter and even more jelly. I can believe it, since my kids picked it for lunch 9 out of 10 times, until very recently. In fact, I just read that Americans will consume billions, with a B, of sandwiches every year. Peanut Butter and Jelly is a staple in most children’s diets. And I think all three of us really love where we live.” It’s an opportunity to work with my friends, be a part of the community, and put our artwork out there. Adds Hussey, “Doing this as a team, I have no fear. The group is aiming for a Memorial Day weekend opening. The mystery partner - a current business owner in the county - will join the collective with her own curated vintage collections and pottery. Says McQuown, “coming together as a group allows us a little more flexibility to maintain our own creative time.” And while they look forward to what they will learn being able to interface with the public, to keep a steady pace making art they also plan to hire a team to run the day-to-day operations at The Warren. Right now, both Hussey and McQuown are selling their work online and in other galleries. “Being stationary and settled here is great. Before she and her husband moved to Leland in 2017 to create a home and more permanent studio location, “I used to do about 25 art shows a year, going from the East Coast to the West Coast, from LA to San Francisco to Seattle to Portland,” she says. Her latest work is inspired by the organic patterns along the waters of the Great Lakes region and Leelanau County in particular. McQuown creates hand-twisted filigree jewelry - using an ancient metalworking technique with a modern aesthetic - under the brand Kelsey Grape. She shares, “I’ve been in the community, but kind of behind the scenes, so I am looking forward to being more outward-facing.” In the past year, her lighthearted, nostalgic fine art landscapes along M-22 and other iconic county locales really took off, and will be a focus in the new collective. Hussey has been creating custom wedding stationary with her company Sable & Gray for eight years, and in November 2019 made the move to Leland with her young family to launch Kristin MacKenzie Design featuring her watercolor prints. “It is a collective with three Leelanau makers and artistic brands coming together at this new retail space, plus the occasional guest pop-up,” explains Hussey. So Hussey, along with Leland’s Kelsey McQuown, a jewelry designer, and another (silent-for-now) partner have signed a lease in Leland Courtyard to open The Warren. Painter/designer Kristin MacKenzie Hussey (pictured) lives and works in Leland, a town that she says is incredibly supportive of its local makers and artists. Bolstered by this knowledge, “plus the past two years and that feeling of isolation,” has made “connecting face-to-face with the community more of a priority,” she says. Right next door, Grand Rapids-based Madcap Coffee Company has begun its northern Michigan expansion (in what was the beloved Blue Boat coffee shop) and will be bringing its trademark hospitality to Leelanau County year-round. Soon three local artists - also friends - will be sharing a revamped storefront in the former Rustic Roots space at 106 N. The Warren (An Artists Collective) And Madcap Coffee To Open Late Spring In Leland By Emily Tyra "Unfortunately, this is still going to be a major issue a century from now," Scambos said in an email. Ted Scambos of the National Snow and Ice Data Center said the recent results add to understanding how Thwaites is diminishing. There's no place to land a plane," NSF's Cutler said. The main trunk's glacier surface "is so messed up by crevasses, it looks like a set of sugar cubes almost. But that would require a helicopter to land on the ice instead of a heavier airplane and would be incredibly difficult, said Eric Rignot of the University of California Irvine. The key to seeing exactly how bad conditions are on the glacier would require going to the main trunk and looking at the melting from below. Researchers couldn't safely land a plane and drill a hole in the ice in the main trunk, which is breaking up much faster. When ice is on ground as part of the glacier, it isn't part of sea rise, but when it breaks off land and then goes onto water, it adds to the overall water level by displacement, just as ice added to a glass of water raises water level.Īnd more bad news: the new research is from the eastern, larger and more stable part of Thwaites. The more the glacier breaks up or retreats, the more ice floats in water. The pencil-shaped robot is giving scientists their first look at the forces eating away at the Thwaites glacier.ĭavis said the melting isn't nearly the problem. A robot nicknamed Icefin is deployed at Thwaites glacier in Antarctica in January 2020. Now for the good news: Much of the flat underwater area the scientists explored is melting much slower than they expected.īut that doesn't really change how much ice is coming off the land part of the glacier and driving up sea levels, Davis said. Pennsylvania State University glaciologist Richard Alley, who also wasn't part of the studies, said the new work "gives us an important look at processes affecting the crevasses that might eventually break and cause loss of much of the ice shelf." "I am definitely expecting the rapid change to continue and accelerate over the next few years." "Thwaites is a rapidly changing system, much more rapidly changing than when we started this work five years ago and even since we were in the field three years ago," said Oregon State University ice researcher Erin Pettit, who wasn't involved in either study. The melting of Thwaites is dominated by what's happening underneath, where warmer water nibbles at the bottom, something called basal melting, said Peter Davis, an oceanographer at British Antarctic Survey, who is a lead author of one of the studies. "Similar rapid retreat pulses are likely to occur in the near future," the study said. A study conducted by marine physicist Alastair Graham at the University of South Florida last year suggested that, despite observations indicating the glacier's melting rate had slowed down compared with previous evaluation periods, it would likely accelerate soon. Researchers say the glacier is in a phase characterized by "rapid retreat," or "collapse," when a broader geological timeline is considered. The glacier's rapid changes have concerned scientists for years. As the planet continues to warm, ice that composes the glacier is melting, like much of the sea ice that surrounds the Earth's north and south poles. The work comes out of a massive $50 million multiyear international research effort to better understand the Florida-sized glacier, which could make sea levels rise more than 2 feet if it melts, though that's expected to take hundreds of years.Īt about 80 miles in width, the Thwaites Glacier is the widest on Earth. But with the robot (named Icefin) lowered down a slender, 1,925-foot hole, they saw how important crevasses are in the fracturing of the ice, which takes the heaviest toll on the glacier, even more than melting. Using a 13-foot pencil-shaped robot that swam under the grounding line where ice first juts over the sea, scientists saw a shimmery critical point in Thwaites' chaotic breakup, "where it's melting so quickly, there's just material streaming out of the glacier," said robot creator and polar scientist Britney Schmidt of Cornell University.īefore, scientists had no observations from this critical but hard-to-reach point on the Thwaites Glacier. Scientists got their first close-up look at what is eating away part of Antarctica's Thwaites ice shelf, nicknamed the "doomsday glacier" because of how much ice it has and how much seas could rise if it all melts - and it's both good and bad news. Ice shelf on Antarctica's "doomsday glacier" could shatter in next 5 years, researchers warn 05:18 Virgo, Pisces, Scorpio, or Libra can be Cancer’s twin flame zodiac match. Overseas, Dead Reckoning opened to $155 million for a global bow of $235 million. The well-reviewed movie earned an A CinemaScore from audiences. So far, older adults are fueling Dead Reckoning, with 22 percent of all ticket buyers in the 55 or older bracket. Maybe he needs to know how long he can breathe in space? Or Cruise wants to parachute into a volcano? Hell, I'd like to see him drive a car straight up the Empire State Building. It may not surprise you that what drives the excitement for Dead Reckoning Part Two isn't how they'll stop the Entity from controlling the world-but how Tom Cruise will top himself yet again. Especially since the Entity is such a static, unphysical villain, it's a stroke of genius to cast Klementieff as a human fighting like she's made of knives. Howling and laughing on her way to kill Ethan Hunt, the crew is completely shaken by a Looney Tunes, Harley Quinn-esque murderer. Hell, they couldn't have even known how bogged down the entertainment landscape would be by A.I. couldn't have known any of this when they set out to make Dead Reckoning Part One. It wouldn't be too farfetched for audiences to connect this scene to the recent OceanGate disaster, where a tourist submarine imploded on its way to explore the wreck of the Titanic. Unbeknownst to any of our central characters, Dead Reckoning Part One's first scene clues us in on a submarine disaster in which the the Entity killed its entire crew. Incidentally, another random plot decision makes the film feel incredibly relevant. Gabriel has a secret past with Ethan Hunt as well. puts a human face to its plan, by choosing newcomer Gabriel (Esai Morales) to act on its behalf. Ethan, I think the Entity knows all of our passwords?! Luckily, the A.I. But its seventh entry, at the very least, hits an entertaining level of camp. Mission Impossible's writing has not improved. Still, that doesn't stop everyone from constantly explaining how computers work to us as if we've never even owned an email address. Dead Reckoning Part One is the seventh film in a nearly 30-year-long franchise, and if Tom Cruise wants to turn it into James Bond meets Lord of the Rings, I'm all here for it. Think Frodo, Mount Doom, the Ring, and you're on the right track. Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his merry band of spies embark on a mission to acquire a key that can shut the A.I. system referred to as "the Entity." Like the Eye of Sauron from Lord of the Rings, this all-seeing, sentient technology now makes decisions on its own with global consequences. It all starts with Dead Reckoning's central villain-an omniscient A.I. But he couldn't have predicted how completely unstuck in time Dead Reckoning Part One would feel in July 2023, when it would eventually hit theaters. Top Gun: Maverick star knew he was going to jump off a cliff on a motorcycle, which is something he would probably do no matter what, movie or not. In December 2020-flustered by the virus's rapid spread-Cruise berated London's Mission: Impossible-Dead Reckoning Part One crew for breaking COVID protocol.
